Photo Challenge & Postcards – Pebbly Beach

For this week’s post I’m back to Block Island, RI. I believe this anchor, photographed from Pebbly Beach, is a wind vane of sorts.

Pebbly Beach was one of our favorite spots to visit on Block Island when we stayed in the Sea Breeze Inn.

Visitors to Block Island have enjoyed the Pebbly Beach for over 100 years.

This postcard is postmarked August 29, 1909, almost 110 years in the past. Here’s an easier to read view of what I think Kate wrote to Willie on that long ago day.

I’m not sure of two words, these I printed in capitals. There seems to be some unspoken drama in this post. I wonder what Kate meant about not being reached??? Even today to visit Block Island requires a boat or plane ride. The mystery is a century old. I love old postcards with messages.

    Intriguing. I think Kate was a schoolgirl and on vacation at Block Island and writing a letter to her governess( tutor) and telling her she’d rather travel than sit for lessons and be on BI where she can’t be reached.
    What do you think?

      I think it is a great way to look at it Susie. I also thought it could be a girl writing to her sister glad to be away from the ‘lessons’ of life her parents always tried to teach them. I love old postcards and always try to find the ones with messages written on them.

          I think I bought this particular one from Ebay or Etsy. Most of my postcards came from a shop in a nearby town that sold books and antique cards/postcards. I love them and once in a while will just sit down and read the old messages on the backs.

      2. Yes, Kathy and Annie could be two sisters or friends and Kathy got the trip to BI( perhaps she was recovering from some flu or disease or something- in those days, they sent people to the seaside to recuperate, didn’t they?) Maybe Annie was sent on a trip to another destination.

          It sounds to me like Annie wasn’t in such an interesting and joy-filled place. Doesn’t it sound like the plot for a book? If only I had the time and skill to write all the crazy things my mind concocts.
