Preserving the Good – 31 Christmas Carols/Do You Hear What I Hear?

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” ~Mark 16:15

The Earth / NASA – Apollo 17 Crew

Said the King, pray for peace, people everywhere. I pray for peace, I also pray I will be able to ‘Go into all the world to proclaim the gospel.’ I feel the two go hand in hand. I didn’t know until I read the history of this song that it was composed as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The link to the history of the song can be found below.

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR? by Gloria Shayne & Noël Regney (1962)

Said the night wind to the little lamb
Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky little lamb
Do you see what I see
A star, a star
Dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
(Do you hear what I hear)
Ringing through the sky shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
(Do you hear what I hear)
A song, a song
High above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know
In your palace wall mighty king
Do you know what I know
(Do you know what I know)
A child, a child
Shivers in the cold
Let us bring him silver and gold
Let us bring him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere
Listen to what I say
(Listen to what I say)Pray for peace people everywhere
Listen to what I say
(Listen to what I say)
The child, the child
Sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

  1. Interesting origin of this song, Kathy. I had wrongly assumed it was composed during the early 1900’s, if not earlier.

BTW, I subscribe to the Farmers’ Almanac online and they recently posted an interesting article about the origins of the “star” which appeared at the time of Jesus’ birth. We will get to view the same planetary alignment in a few days – Dec. 21st. My luck, we will have overcast skies so it won’t be visible.

I think I have a bit about it on a post somewhere earlier in the month, but it’s a good reminder to look for it, and I will include it Monday too.
