Photographs – Hidden Treasure

Block Island, Rhode Island beaches are part sand, part rocky pebbles. The larger stones have been used since the early centuries of our country as cobblestones for New England roadways. I am fascinated by the beauty of these rocks. The amazing array of colors and the wave-tumbled smooth surfaces mesmerize me. Much like Sanibel Island, Florida, known for the famous “Sanibel Stoop,” (a title describing beachcombers searching for shells on the beaches,) Block Island turns beachcombers into rockhounds, creating a posture that could be named, “The Block Island Bend.”

The interesting stone in today’s photograph is a cabbage-sized rock I found on Block Island. I brought it home as a doorstop, and often pick it up to gaze at what seems to be treasure inside. The exterior of the stone is a quite ordinary, but within a zig-zagging crack on the surface, the facets of polished quartz are visible, transforming the ordinary stone, into an extraordinary keepsake.

Planting – Terrarium Creation

This is a re-post from a few years ago, but well worth repeating once again. If you have small outdoor plants you want to save from winter weather, they are the perfect candidate for placing in a terrarium.

1. Select Container/Add a layer of pebbles.

2. Add a layer of charcoal.

3. Add a layer of humus/soil.

4. Add plants and mosses.

5. Add lichens, rocks, and small statues. (Mine are elephants from Red Rose Teabag boxes) Water sparingly, rinse excess dirt off of sides. Cover with lid of some type. Enjoy your beautiful terrarium.

Care of terrariums: Mosses like gentle sun, morning light exposure is best for a terrarium. Try to lift lid each day to give terrarium fresh air. Your terrarium will self-water, if it develops a look of dryness water sparingly once again.

Proverbs – Painted Pebbles

I am once again posting these pebbles my sister Amy and nephew Abel painted for me. I love the story connected to them, and even better: there are more chapters to the story. In fact, the pebbles cause me to dream and hopefully the dreams will bear fruit soon in the future.

My sister Amy and my nephew Abel painted these pebbles for me. They remind me of Faberge Eggs. I love what Amy does with her painted pebbles. When she hikes in the mountains of North Carolina she leaves the pebbles along the trail to be found by other hikers. I enjoy picturing her placing her painted gems amid the tangled roots of trees or within a clump of grass or fern. I also enjoy imagining the happiness of those who find these sweet gems.

Painting – Mixing Tip for Soft-Bodied Acrylics

I am using soft-bodied acrylic paints at the present time. I have noticed they tend to separate leaving an oily layer on top. Shaking them will eventually incorporate them once again, but an even quicker way to blend them together is to drop a few tiny pebbles into the bottle before shaking. The pebbles rock and roll inside the paint container as you shake, mixing the paint together much quicker.

So far it has worked very well for me, and I haven’t had the bottle become clogged with the pebbles…at least not yet.
