Your garden looks great! I followed the math on the soil and it started out as 6 inches in spring, but was only 3 inches in fall. I didn’t notice until after I had planted. Nothing grew except bush beans. Everything else? never took off. In spring, I had 2 squares of peas (18 plants, I think) and never got enough to make more than 2 cups of cooked peas. Very discouraged! :(‘will try again this spring. Add more height to box and more expensive soil. Would love to get some planting tips from you. Lovely garden!!!! 🙂 congrats!!!!!

Hi Tonya, I enjoyed the square foot garden so much, I am planning on adding at least one oversized bed, hopefully 4 x 10 and also perhaps one at the end of my porch. I am in the midst of winter sowing seeds for transplanting into the gardens now. I found that the plants I was able to grow this way were so much hardier than anything I had grown in the past. I agree with you about peas. They don’t produce enough for meals…so what I do, I stand out in my yard, pop the pods and eat them raw. They are scrumptious and taste like candy if you are able to harvest them this way before they get too big. What did well for me…all lettuces, until of course the weather became too hot. Kale was my best preformer, and parsley was a close second. These lived and thrived until just a few days ago when the Middle Atlantic states experienced extremely cold weather. Bread seed poppies were a third place winner, but they only live briefly, set their wonderful seed, and die back. They are definitely worth it though, and I sowed their seeds in milk cartons via winter sowing. I have several blog posts on winter sowing throughout the blog, and will be adding more as I am planning on planting this way again. Eggplant did well, peppers, cucumbers, birdhouse gourds (although I planted these way too late and they didn’t have time to grow large. Squash was very happy, grew some spaghetti varieties, but they take up a lot of room. I finally put a tomato cage around them. A few things that surprised me and didn’t work were beets…it could have been something I did wrong or bad seeds. Carrots never really did much either…they grew but were very, very small and a bit bitter. I will try EVERYTHING once more. I did notice the soil did sink a few inches. I will add more this spring. My husband also turned and broke up the dirt beneath the gardens before we added the good stuff. Vermiculite…very expensive…but it seems to be the key. Happy gardening. Thanks for commenting and please come back again. Kathy
