Problem-Solving – Cleaning Salt Stains from Uggs Boots

Cleaning Salt Stains from Ugg Boots

My Uggs Boots were stained by salt last year. I don’t know why I waited a whole year to clean them off, I suppose it is the classic, out of sight, out of mind syndrome. Thankfully, I do know a good way of cleaning them by applying shaving cream and rubbing with a soft cloth. Below you can see my progress. As I write, the boot I treated is sitting beside a heater vent drying. If there is any residue still left I will repeat the steps.

Dampen the entire boot so there is no line of demarcation when they dry. Apply the shaving cream and gently rub the soiled area with a soft cleaning cloth. Spread the shaving cream lightly around the entire boot with the cloth. No need for a heavy coat, just a light touch of the shaving cream will keep the color and texture of the boot uniform.

The boot on the right was previously treated. You can see the slightest bit of salt stain around arch of the boot, but all in all, unless someone was looking for the problem area, I don’t think it is very noticeable. Give this money saving tip a try. It certainly beats spending near $15.00 to have your boots professionally cleaned.

Hi Danielle, I had to recently clean mine yet again…with all the snow we have had. This time the white line was very heavy, I treated the boots twice. The first time the line faded, the second time it faded to almost nothing. When winter is over I will clean them until they are good as new again. Good luck!

So I tried this and it worked pretty well but I decided to do it again because they weren’t as clean as I wanted. I’m going to water proof them again soon.

I treated mine twice the last time to remove all traces of salt. We are expecting snow again, since I like the warmth of the Ugg’s in cold snowy weather, I can foresee I’ll be using this technique yet again. Good thing it is very gentle. Happy Winter!

Thank you for this! Stealing my fiance’s shaving cream seemed to work much better than the $18 Kiwi cleaning kit did. I’ll know much better next time!

Hi Becky! I have used this many times this winter season…snow, ice, rain, slush…you name it…we have had it, and I like my warm Uggs to keep me dry. They do get battered though…Thanks for the comment. Kathy

Hi Jenny, You can clean your Uggs the same day as they are soiled. I left mine sitting stained and soiled quite by accident…one of those, “I’ll get around to it later,” mistakes. Luckily, even after all the time had passed, the shaving cream still worked magic. Lucky me! 🙂

Once you’ve rubbed in the shaving cream are you supposed to wipe the excess off with a damp rag, or do you just keep rubbing until it’s all gone?

    1. I think it is worth a try on anything! It is harmless…at least I am assuming it is since it is approved to be used on human skin. 🙂 If you try it…let me know how it works. I’ve tried shaving cream on oil spots I dropped on a pair of suede moccasin slippers. I am a sloppy cook at times. I think it removed most of it.

    1. I have had good luck with all kinds of stains…try it, but be sure to cover the WHOLE area, not just the stained area and then gently rub away at the area with the stain. Let me know how it works.

How much time do they take that the darkness on the shaving cream goes away??? I waited for about 24 hrs and the stain of the shaving cream didn´t go away… 😦
