It snowed again this week. February has lived up to it’s cold reputation in southern New Jersey. For two years in a row we had little snow; we are wishing for those days back again as more icy rain is on the way tomorrow, and then another storm could arrive a few days later.
Recently, at the start of another bout of snowy weather, I looked out the window and spotted a flock of birds. I couldn’t tell by their silhouettes what type of bird they were, but thought I saw a flash of orange breast.
Sure enough, they were robins. Poor things, they looked miserable hunched against the snowflakes and wind. When I took a close-up photograph I chuckled, but also felt some sympathy, one robin had an icicle beard. Brrrr…I’m with the robins, I want Spring to come and Winter to quickly end.
This photograph is part of Skywatch.
Cold but beautiful! Amazing how the birds adapt to the extreme cold.

I wish I was adapting as well as they are…I’m ready for the warm weather to return.

I hear ya!! It’s almost 5 A.M. (my sleep habits are terrible as I’ve aged) and according to Yahoo weather, we are at -3 degrees right now and dropping to -4. I HATE winter!!

I have some cardinals too. They love the feeder, and this week I added extra safflower seed for them.

Are they susceptible to the colds? Nice capture.

I’m not sure. I will have to read the article Janie posted in the comments. Perhaps there is some info on how they make out in the cold.

Love your photos, Kathy. Good brief “robin” article here from Cornell.

I feel so sorry for the poor wee garden critters, especially the ones who migrated from the north. Go further south!

So do I…I think they stay around all year in our area. I have seen them in the snow in other winters.

When I saw my first robin in January, a bird enthusiast assured me robins do not migrate. I never knew that because I never used to see them before Spring. 👀🍃

Hi, The link a few comments up had great information about robins. I didn’t know they change behavior during different seasons. They fly together in the winter, in spring they become territorial. I love birds…so interesting. Thanks for stopping by the blog.
