I’m reading Our Zoo by June Mottershead. The book tells the story of how the Chester Zoo in England came into existence. Goodreads has some interesting comments from readers who enjoyed the book.
I found the book by watching the six-episode series Our Zoo. The series can be found on Paramount, Hoopla (available free through some libraries), and other streaming services. I enjoyed this adaptation of the true story.
The Chester Zoo is still open in Upton-by-Chester, Chester, England. The website has excellent photographs of the zoo through the decades.
Here’s a short video that looks behind the scenes of the series.

I have always enjoyed zoo visits. Thanks for sharing this.

The series was a good one too.. And while I have not read the actual book… I have been to Chester Zoo.. Both as a child and an adult on Day trips out..

I wish I lived closer and could see the zoo. I have two and a half good zoos near me. One is in Philadelphia, very large in the middle of the city. The other is a free zoo in Cape May. It is near the ocean and a pleasure to visit. They setting is very natural a bit like I assume the Chester Zoo must be like.

It’s years since I visited as my children adults now. But it was well maintained,
Even though I don’t agree with caging animals . They were and I hope still are well cared for. X 💕

Whoops, forgot the half zoo. It is just a small zoo in a nearby town that is also free and has some interesting exhibits.

I have heard of Chester Zoo before. My cousin visited England a few years ago – she was born there and now lives in Australia – and knew I would be interested. I was born a Mottershead and I am an extremely keen family historian. So far I haven’t found a connection between my line of the family tree and that of George Mottershead, but I haven’t spent much time searching either. Who knows, he may be related as my family is from Cheshire also.
Thank you for sharing this post today. Now I must buy the book by June Mottershead. ❤

Oh my goodness. Mottershead is such a rare name. I don’t know that I ever heard it before I watched the series and read this book. I fyour family was from the same area there is such a good chance you might be related. I haven’t finished the book yet, but it is a great read so far.

It is definitely a rare name in Australia too! I spent my life, until I married, having to spell my name and teach people how to pronounce it! It’s more common in the north of England, apparently. I ordered the book yesterday, so I hope I get it, I had a notification email today to say stocks of the book are low. I’m really looking forward to reading it. 😊

I’m enjoying it, as I did the series. Although I have read some of the attitudes of the mother in the series were exaggerated to make for more drama. In the book she seems much more supportive.

I’d prefer to believe the book, which is the words and opinion of the daughter. 🙂
