Phavorites and Plants – Spider Plant

Blog April 045

This is a spider plant I have had for several years. I let the plant become potbound…this is key to the mother plant sending out shoots of plantlets, or as I call them, “babies.”

I have rooted many babies and now have other baskets of plants growing in the rafters of my basement, waiting for warmer weather to move out onto the patio.

Spider plants are more than just a pretty sight. They also are one of the top plants for filtering out impurities in the air you breathe. More information about houseplants that filter air can be found here: Houseplants That Filter the Air

I also have more “babies” rooting in containers and vases all over the house. They add a bit of green to the rooms they are in, they root quickly, and are soon ready to pot up. I have loved spider plants for as long as I have enjoyed and collected houseplants. Happy gardening!

Phavorites – Glorious Greens

Easter 147

Greens can be the most glorious of colors. There is something soothing to the spirit of most of mankind when the sun lights up the greens of a canopy of foliage with beams of brilliant light.

I love this description of God’s throne found in the book of Revelation: “… A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne.” Revelation 4:3

Perspective & Phavorites – Blue Monday

Easter 047

A blue mood can sometimes take hold after the joy of a holiday. Today I am giving into the blueness and delighting in the many shades of azure I was able to enjoy in the Longwood Gardens Conservatory on Sunday. What an array of tones we found there, from the sky blue of Forget-Me-Nots and Himalayan Poppies, through the deep purple-blue of Spring Pansies. These blues lift my spirit. I hope they lift yours too!

Artists and Crafters: Please feel free to make use of these photographs as reference for painting, projects, etc.

Easter 088

This beautiful blue poppy is almost spent, but in it’s last hours the petals are at their most beautiful as they become tinted with softest pink before dropping from the plant.

Easter 087

I thought this bed of blue flowers was incredibly lovely, a gorgeous mix of hydrangeas, cineraria and Himalayan poppies.

Easter 089

I am always  entranced by the buds of the poppies too.

Easter 137

Who can resist smiling back at these joyful pansy faces?

Phavorites & Philm – Enchanted April

Enchanted April

This is one of the movies I put in the DVD/Video player when I am feeling ill or blue. The first time I saw this gentle story I did not care much for the slow pace, but I am so glad I gave it a second chance. I have viewed the movie many times since that first glimpse into the story, and I never tire of it’s timeless appeal.

Favorite scene: Mellersh standing in hallway wearing only a  towel after bathroom blows up around him. Funny.

Phavorite & Product – Mickey or Donald?

Donald Duck, created with a Cricut Machine.

pics 010

A week or two ago someone dear to me emailed me this question, “Who is your favorite, Mickey or Donald?”

I think you can see by the picture above what my response was to her.

What a surprise to have a package arrive yesterday with this beautiful Donald Duck inside. Thanks Kelly. You do beautiful work! I love him!

I have attempted only a few scrapbook pages in my time. I know that since I am into so many other crafts, along with gardening and spending time with grandchildren, the time involved would put me over the top of hours available. It’s an art and form of expression I truly admire.

Who do you like best, Donald or Mickey?

Phavorites and People – Trumpet Lamp and Fountain

anita's horn2

Today I sent a friend a link to a terrific trumpet fountain I saw on Pinterest. She sent me back this amazing picture of a lamp she made out of a trumpet. I love it!

Here are some of the components she used to create the lamp: Hardware store supplies: tube for wiring, screw locks, base-for a clock. Craft store supplies: Lamp shade. She also used parts from an old lamp and locking tie downs to secure. The pocket trumpet was bought from EBay for a good price.

Anita, creator of the lamp, is a retired teacher and band instructor. We’ve known each other since we were in High School. She plays beautiful trumpet solos in our church during Offertory and also plays with the Atlantic Brass Band. Here are a few links for the Atlantic Brass Band:

Items that are re-purposed into art or something functional always fascinate me.

Phavorites – Victoria Magazine

Image (26)

I must have over a hundred old Victoria magazines in my upstairs closet. I know, I know, it sounds a bit like hoarding, but I just can’t seem to make myself recycle or sell them. In the last few weeks I’ve been paging through the old issues, and tearing out articles and pictures I can’t seem to do without. Alas, (A very Victorian expression) even while I am weeding out old ephemera, I’m also in the process of creating a new collection. Big Sigh! At least it won’t take up quite so much room. Smile!

Phavorites & Painting – Anemones and Grape Hyacinth

anemone and grape

Several years ago on a walk around the neighborhood I came upon a gorgeous array of grape hyacinth and white anemones in a neighbor’s garden. Luckily, she lives only a few doors down, and I was able to return home for my camera. I have painted this as an ACEO, a small 2.5 x 3.5 inch painting, and have plans to someday paint it very large.  A good art resolution for 2013 is to always have my camera or a piece of paper to sketch on when I venture out of the house.

Prose and Phavorites – A Little Princess

I was a constant reader as a child. I had many favorites, Heidi, The Swiss Family Robinson, The Laura Ingalls Little House books. One of my favorite authors was Frances Hodgson Burnett. I loved The Secret Garden and also A Little Princess. As an adult I sometimes revisit these books. I take after my maternal Grandmother in that characteristic, she loved children’s classics too. Recently, I had an inclination to reread A Little Princess. It was just as wonderful a story as it was when I first read it near forty-five years ago. I was struck by the wisdom I found in the book. I especially liked this paragraph in Chapter VI.

“If Nature has made you a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that-warm things, kind things, sweet things-help and comfort and laughter-and sometimes gay, kind laughter is the best help of all.”

Phavorites – Manic Monday

Hurricane Sandy postponed our Halloween and Trick or Treating here in New Jersey. Today children will wear their costumes and ring doorbells. I discovered this amazing Jack O’Lantern choir while bike-riding Saturday. I couldn’t resist driving by again on Sunday, this time with camera in tow, to take a picture. I love this!
