From above, all I see is an oak leaf.
Ground-level and sideways, I spy the biggest mantis pod, or ootheca, I’ve ever seen. Mantis pods are easier to find at this of year when grassy foliage is dry and withered. I usually have the best luck in spotting them when I walk through sunny meadows.
My eyesight is not as good as yours, and I don’t know what I’m looking for. I’m glad you saw it.

When we are looking for them my husband and I always look for a brown foam tornado shape. They are terrific predator bugs and keep out unwanted bugs. I don’t want too many in my yard though as they will eat good bugs too…and of course they are cannibals…so it’s every mantis for itself.
