Longwood Gardens and The Greater Philadelphia Dahlia Society hosted The American Dahlia Society’s 2018 National Show this past weekend. I was able to attend and admire the many varieties. My husband and I are inspired to grow a few named varieties of dahlias in next year’s garden. We both had our favorites. I loved the large dinner plate dahlias. My favorite was the pink and yellow bloom. These dahlias are part of Cee’s Flower of the Day.

My husband likes the simpler daisy-like blossom. I’m sure there is room for both our favorites in our 2019 gardens. It will be fun to research and plan ahead throughout the winter months.

I love this view of the display. The spectators blend right into the blooms and seem to be part of the beautiful indoor garden.

Longwood Gardens has a very informative article on growing dahlias: Growing Dahlias at Home
There are several sources for dahlia tubers in the US, I’ve included a sampling:
Another good source for dahlia information can be found at the Dahlia Addict site.

I love the color combination of pink and yellow. Maybe one day I’ll have a small garden plot with this color combination. I love any flower that captures both the colors at the same time within its bloom.

Don’t the people blend in well? I like the smiles I caught on some of their faces. There was happiness in the air.

I am hoping to add another Dahlia plant or two to our garden next year. The success we had with the one plant has been encouraging. Maybe I have finally found the right location to grow them.

Thanks…you will have to come over and admire them in person when we grow them next Spring/Summer.

I love your dahlias- I liked the mixed color varieties too. The white petaled one with red outlines was intriguing- are these hybrids?
Dahlias are long lasting in that after they flower their tubers remain underground and throw up new flowers the next year.
With all success in your dahlia endeavors.

Thanks so much Susie. My husband liked the simple white with red too so we will look for a few of those to plant and also the big yellow and pink I liked so much.

Your dahlia photos are perfect. That looks like a great flower show. They are such a nice bit of color this time of year…gotta love the flowers that keep blooming as the days cool down.
