Spring’s warm weather brings hundreds of Shoobies to Ocean City to walk the boards. Shoobie is a slang term for daytrippers who visit the Jersey shore for a day or weekend. I’m not ashamed to admit the moniker ‘Shoobie’ can often be applied to me.
It’s sometimes difficult to decide which way to turn on the boardwalk, but our starting point is usually Ninth Street. Why? Ninth street is where our favorite pizza place, Manco and Manco, is located.

If you don’t want to walk you can pull up a seat on a surrey.
It might seem odd to find a library on the beach, but I think it’s a great idea. I’ve seen these small book exchange boxes in local towns, but this is the first beach library I’ve seen.
We stopped at the neighboring town of Strathmere on the way home. Walking the beach we took notice of an area on the edge of the dunes. Cordoned off with wire, signs warned against entering the area due to endangered birds nesting in the area. I love shore birds and was glad to see their nesting area was protected. I hope they will nest and rear their young before even more Shoobies arrive in the summer.

It’s a beautiful place. One of my favorite day trips and only an hour away from my home.

Thankful they are protecting the birds. Do they do the same for turtles? I have often wondered how you would know if walking over a bed of turtle eggs.

You would never know. Years ago on my blog I posted a video of a turtle at a local playground laying its eggs in the sand while the children played on the equipment. I am sure everyone walked over those eggs when she was finished and never knew they were there. The turtle was a painted turtle that must have come out of the nearby lake. Near the sea, we see turtles, and if they are crossing the road we will stop and take them to the other side. Some still become casualties of the car wheels. It is hard to see them until you are right on top of them. There are turtle crossing signs in ocean and bay areas. Thanks for the great question and comment.

I loved that little library.

So did I. I think in season it is probably well-stocked as people read and exchange their books.

The sunny day is what got my attention. Seems like the broadwalk had a lot of empty spaces- not enough shoobies maybe. Was it cold?
Does it snow there ever, I ask because it is by the seaside?
Great post, Kathy.

Hi Susie, It was pretty crowded for early Spring. Not much is open there yet. Most of the boardwalk shops are still closed until the end of May when the true season starts. In the town itself, on Asbury Avenue, we noticed a lot of people too and most of the shops were open. Most of the people on the boardwalk were there to walk or, like us, to get pizza. It wasn’t cold, but we did need long sleeves or jackets. It does snow, but not that often, usually by the time the storms near the sea water they turn to rain. If it does snow it is often a bad storm called a N’or Easter. Thanks Susie, I love your comments. Kathy

Many thanks for giving me a marvelous memory of the east coast, especially the gorgeous boardwalk. It brought back great memories of Ocean Grove & Asbury Park, NJ. Love the photo of the beach library .. hope you enjoyed the pizza!

Thanks so much in return. Oh yes, we will drive the hour and a bit even in the wintertime to have a few slices of that delicious pizza. I thought the beach library really clever. I’m sure for someone who wants to read and forgot their book it is much appreciated.
