Parade – Memorial Day 2019

Memorial Day is celebrated as the opening of summer, but it’s true meaning is as a remembrance day for those who have served our country and lost their lives in making this the Land of the Free.

I give my thanks to everyone who has served, not just on the battlefield and military, but for those who serve as peacekeepers (police force), fire-fighters, EMT technicians and the endless list of others who give of their time and talent to make this country great. Thank you for your service.

  1. Kathy, it’s sad that many young people do not understand the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day (which occurs in November). Somehow they conflate the 2 (don’t know what they are taught in our schools these days). I am a USMC veteran, served from 1970 to 1972. On this day, I think of all the American warriors (especially WWI and II) who are buried in cemeteries on foreign soil. A Flanders organization said the following: “A million soldiers from more than 50 different countries were wounded, missing or killed in action here.”

Yesterday, I watched a YT video of a Scottish bagpipe unit in Flanders Field, who played the anthem songs for our 4 branches of the service, Marines, Navy, Army and Air Force. Very touching, made my eyes water (love bagpipe music).

Thanks Janie. Even though we mark the holiday with family gatherings and the parade I also like to take some moments and remember that so many paid for my freedom with their life.
