Phlowers & Quote – Roses and Emerson

Sometimes, much like today, I need to focus momentarily on something simple and beautiful, and set aside every nuance that might darken my day. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, this flower, both do me good during a day of running around, cleaning, and cooking. God bless you all on Thanksgiving Eve.

The roses are a mirage of my memory now. Photographed a few years ago in the Longwood Conservatory, the rose hall has been torn down and is being replaced by a new, more modern structure. I will miss walking alongside the beautiful bushes, and hope rebuilding will not be a protracted project.

My roses are part of Cee’s Flower of the Day.

  1. The color of that rose might be my favorite of all time. So pretty! Visiting Longwood Conservatory is on my to-do list. I recently noticed they had an awesome mum festival. I’m wondering what time of year is “the best” time to visit. What do you think?

    1. Right now the conservatory is about half the size as it was, but still…in winter, when you are flower-starved, to walk inside those door and have the fragrance of flowers and high humidity waft over you is something irreplaceable. I also love going in the Spring when the tulips are planted in the outdoor beds. The only time I tend not to go, although I have several times, is at Christmas. In peak times the crowds are very thick and it is hard to move at your own pace.

      1. yes – all about balancing the cognitive load and physical load.

And I planted a new rose of Sharon from a starter – and thought of my dear Timeless Lady – I am hoping it survives the winter – hmmm
        keep you posted

          1. Oh how nice to hear that yours is thriving and has a topiary shape!
I did have a second starter rose of Sharon, but the deer nibbled it one day in July – I heard it is not a highly desirable plant for them but might have been a last resort – they also gobbled up the clearance Hibiscus I bought –
anyhow, I saved the second rose of Sharon base (because they just ate the tops parts) and that one might make it next year….

hope you had a nice thanksgiving

    1. They did, at least the back half of it. They have already reconstructed the orchid house, and they work on it all the time when we visit. I think it will take many years though to complete it. I still like going and will probably rejoin in the winter, although the conservatory walk-through is about half as large.
