Prose, People & Place – The Dirty Life/Kristin Kimball Blog/Essex Farm

life on farm:

Okay, I’ll admit it, I am only on page 51 of The Dirty Life. Why am I already raving about this book in a blog post? Well…because…oh the joy of it…I found a blog written by Kristin Kimball and I wanted to share it here: Kristin Kimball Blog

I am enjoying the book, much as a person who is hungry devours a perfect meal. The book is leaving me with an uplifted spirit after each reading. As I read through the first chapters, it was easy to imagine myself, along with Mark and Kristin, on a hunt for the perfect farm. In the next section, titled “Winter,” I will be reading about the planning stages of the farm.

When I searched Google Images for photographs of the farm, oh happy day, I found the blog. I can’t wait to explore some of the posts. Visit the Essex farm today, either through the book, or the blog, or both. You won’t be disappointed.

People – Oswald Chambers

Excerpts from the June 14th devotional in Still Higher for His Highest:

“The prayer of the feeblest saint on earth who lives in the Spirit and keeps right with God is a terror to Satan. The very powers of darkness are paralysed by prayer…”

“No wonder Satan tries to keep our minds fussy in active work till we cannot think in prayer.”

“The philosophy of prayer is that prayer is the work.”

I have read devotionals written by Oswald Chambers for a few decades now. Chambers was born, the son of a Baptist minister, in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1874. He originally trained at London’s Royal Academy of Art, but felt called into the ministry. His life story is told in the book, Oswald Chambers: Abandoned to God. He died in November of 1917. His books are still in print all over the world. My favorites: My Utmost for His Highest and Still Higher for his Highest.

Recharging…Resting…Rejuvenating… In the meantime, I’m re-blogging some of my favorite posts. Happy Spring!

The first meeting in the tabernacle in Pitman, New Jersey, was held in 1871. A history of the town and the camp meeting can be found here: History of Pitman, New Jersey. The tabernacle is at the center of twelve paths, or spokes, reminiscent of the twelve apostles.

C. Austin Miles, a prolific songwriter, wrote the hymn, “In the Garden,” while staying in the grove area. He said of himself, “It is as a writer of gospel songs I am proud to be known, for in that way I may be of the most use to my Master, whom I serve willingly although not as efficiently as is my desire.”

Here are a few pictures I took Sunday at about 10:00 in the morning.

These small cottages are just a sampling of the dozens and dozens that surround the tabernacle.

Many years ago when I first moved to the area with my parents, I called this cottage on the fringes of the tabernacle wheel my home. What I remember most about it was the amazing attic it had. When I lived there it had a long front porch which has since been enclosed.

I don’t know if I was aware of it in past years, but April 10th was National Siblings Day. I am blessed with two sisters…here is an old photograph of us together on the front lawn of our home in 1972 or ’73. I am the one on the left. I might be a couple days late, but anyway…”Happy Siblings Day…Sisters.”

People -Amy Carmichael

So often when I search for quotes for my “Inspiring Words for Today,” sidebar, Amy Carmichael’s timeless words seem the perfect choice. In today’s post I’ve included a bit of her biography along with a link to more information about her life and work for the Lord.

“Amy Wilson Carmichael (16 December 1867 – 18 January 1951) was a Protestant Christian missionary in India, who opened an orphanage and founded a mission in Dohnavur. She served in India for 55 years without furlough and wrote many books about the missionary work there.” Wikepedia

Here are a few outstanding quotes from Amy Carmichael:
“I would rather burn out than rust out.”
― Amy Carmichael

“But God is the God of the waves and the billows, and they are still His when they come over us; and again and again we have proved that the overwhelming thing does not overwhelm. Once more by His interposition deliverance came. We were cast down, but not destroyed.”
― Amy Carmichael

“There is only one way of victory over the bitterness and rage that comes naturally to us–To will what God wills brings peace.”
― Amy Carmichael

“Do not fight the thing in detail: turn from it. Look ONLY at your Lord. Sing. Read. Work.”
― Amy Carmichael

“Satan is so much more in earnest than we are–he buys up the opportunity while we are wondering how much it will cost.”
― Amy Carmichael

“If by doing some work which the undiscerning consider ‘not spiritual work’ I can best help others, and I inwardly rebel, thinking it is the spiritual for which I crave, when in truth it is the interesting and exciting, then I know nothing of Calvary love.”
― Amy Carmichael

“The best training is to learn to accept everything as it comes, as from Him whom our soul loves. The tests are always unexpected things, not great things that can be written up, but the common little rubs of life, silly little nothings, things you are ashamed of minding one scrap”
― Amy Carmichael

People – Susan Boyle

susan boyle book

I read the autobiography of Susan Boyle, “The Woman I Was Born To Be,” and enjoyed every page. Happily, I found that what I had perceived about Susan, while watching her television appearances, and most of all through the glory of her voice, surpassed all my hopes. Susan’s life story is as much a joy to read as listening to her music is a joy to my ears.

Susan Boyle’s album, Home for Christmas, is one of two I purchased this Christmas season. The content and musicality did not disappoint. What I love and support the most about Susan Boyle is her solid faith and moral fortitude in including songs of God’s love in her albums.

In the links below you will find an inspiring life story and messages that dare to tell the truth. Too many people preach politically correct messages rather than God’s truth. Visit these links and prepare to hear truth and be inspired. The testimony of Lon Solomon and his conversion to Christ Jesus is an amazing glimpse into how God works and how he uses those who turn their lives over to him.

People – Preachers/Joyce Meyer

Over the next three days I’m going to post a few thoughts on three of my favorite ministers. I watch or listen to these terrific preachers through media outlets: television, printed word, and a church audio/video website. Each one is different from the next. I have found these three to be reliable and feel they preach from the word of God. While I know that I am never going to agree 100% with everything any preacher says, and I would question my own relationship with God if I did, from what I have heard in their recent sermons and devotionals, I know that they are on track in what is going on in my life and in the world at this time in history.

I watch Joyce Meyer Ministries almost every day at 8:30 on a local cable channel. I sit down and with a cup of coffee in my hand, wait for her to help me realize little quirks and flaws I need to address in my own character and life. She rarely accuses, instead she uses her own life, her little quirks and flaws, her past and her present, to bring Bible truths home to me. Yesterday after hearing the sermon she preached I was sure it was the link I wanted to use for today’s post, and then I watched today’s broadcast, and was sure that I should use today’s message…so…I am including the links to both and also the link to her main broadcast page. I hope you will listen and laugh and learn as I do. I always feel recharged, refreshed, and ready to change things I should, large and small.

Wednesday mornings are a pleasure for us while on Block Island. We never miss the Farmer’s Market in the Manisses Parking lot. This year I found this lovely card by photographer Robin Langsdorf. I really enjoyed taking a look at her many works of art framed and in greeting card format. I purchased the one above and asked if I could include it on one of my blog posts and she kindly agreed.  Please take a look at her gorgeous site: Robin B. Langsdorf

Phavorites and People – Trumpet Lamp and Fountain

anita's horn2

Today I sent a friend a link to a terrific trumpet fountain I saw on Pinterest. She sent me back this amazing picture of a lamp she made out of a trumpet. I love it!

Here are some of the components she used to create the lamp: Hardware store supplies: tube for wiring, screw locks, base-for a clock. Craft store supplies: Lamp shade. She also used parts from an old lamp and locking tie downs to secure. The pocket trumpet was bought from EBay for a good price.

Anita, creator of the lamp, is a retired teacher and band instructor. We’ve known each other since we were in High School. She plays beautiful trumpet solos in our church during Offertory and also plays with the Atlantic Brass Band. Here are a few links for the Atlantic Brass Band:

People – Dr. Benjamin Carson

Now and then someone comes along who speaks with wisdom and foresight. I applaud Dr. Benjamin Carson and include him here on my blog as a person of character and very good vision for our country.

The Benjamin Carson story has been made into a feature film starring Cuba Gooding, Jr.

People – A Person’s a Person

blog 014

I love Kohl’s Cares Merchandise, sold for a great price, the proceeds are 100% donated to charity. I like that. A week ago I was in Kohls’ spending a Christmas gift certificate when I saw Horton on the rack of Kohl’s Cares Merchandise. I love this Dr. Seuss story. I picked Horton up, and heard my favorite line in my thoughts…

“A person’s a person no matter how small.”

I bought Horton and have him in the room where I read my Bible and pray. He is a bit of a mascot for me. This silly-looking stuffed blue elephant reminds me of the small children among us and the small child within myself. All our lives, whether we are young or old, have moments of intense need for nurturing and encouragement.

I believe “a person’s a person no matter how small.” Whether they are the size of a big blue elephant, or the size of the smallest invisible speck. A person is a person from the start to the end…and even beyond. This I believe…this I know.

“You did form my inward parts, you knit me together in my mother’s womb…you knew me right well; my frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret…”  Psalm 139:13-15

“”Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” Jeremiah 1:4-5

“Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death; don’t stand back and let them die. Don’t try to disclaim responsibility by saying you didn’t know about it.” Proverbs 24:11-12

Purpose, Perspective and People – Doing Good

church 4

I have been studying the book of Hebrews this past year. I am about two thirds of the way through this amazing book of the Bible. In recent weeks I have come upon a verse that I decided would be a verse of purpose for me in the coming year.

“In response to all he has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good.” Hebrews 10:24. (TLB)

I like the way this verse is worded, and it seems to go hand in hand with what Jesus told us in Matthew.

Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second most important is similar: ‘Love your neighbor as much as you love yourself.’ All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets stem from these two laws and are fulfilled if you obey them. Keep only these and you will find you are obeying all the others.” Matthew 22:37-40 (TLB)

Two members of my family are a good example of fulfilling the commandments and purpose expressed in these verses. In towns in Panama, Nicaragua and Peru there are now beautiful and structurally sound churches for worshipping God due to their commitment to doing good and using their strengths and resources to further God’s Kingdom. The churches they build stand in the place of lean-tos and sheds or no building at all. When the new church buildings are complete there is room for up to three hundred people. Congregations of 28 have grown to 200 or more people praising and worshipping God. There is room in the churches for the congregation to grow, lives are changed, people are saved. Children grow up worshipping God in a structure that is sound and secure. I can’t help but add an “Amen” and “Praise God.”

church 2

I might not be able to build churches, but I can use the resources I have to build good things in the lives of those my life touches. Every day usually brings an opportunity of some kind to us all. Whether it is a large thing, a small thing, a public work, or a work done in secret, all of us have the opportunity to fulfill the purpose in Hebrews 10:24. I am committed to “doing good” in the New Year of 2013.

Here are a few more pictures of the new churches going up and their congregations. God bless us all in this New Year.

People – My Long Lost Pen Pal

Image (3)

In the late 1970’s I entered my name and address in a publication for International Penpals. I was newly married, in my early 20’s, and very interested in exchanging letters with someone in another country. I contacted someone from England, a country where many of my ancestors emigrated from, and had a reply from a young woman near my own age by the name of Linda. We conversed for a few years. I know she lived in Birmingham, I think her last name was Hamilton or Hampton, and when she married I think her name was changed to Smith. I remember she liked to “caravan.” A word alien to me, but in Britain-speak it means to camp, at least I think so. The photograph above was taken in Coleshill Park, and the dog’s name was Skip. Sadly, after we both had children, and became busy, we lost touch. I would love to find her again. If anyone resides in this area of England, and knows an auburn-haired pretty lady, in her fifties, called Linda, please forward her this blog. Thanks!

In this age of technology we are living in writing with pen and paper and having penpals must seem alien to at least half the population. Email does make it easier, but it’s great to have a hard copy of someone’s thoughts. If the picture above had been sent to me through email, I doubt I would still have it. Here’s hoping in 2013 I’ll be able to reconnect with Linda again.

Photographs & People – Happy Anniversary Dad and Mom

Today is my parent’s anniversary. Happy Anniversary Dad and Mom…and many, many more! I love you…always.

Beautiful…and she still is! She has always dressed so pretty and refined. I love the pocketbook, the gloves in her hand and the hat. What a lady!

Handsome…and he still is! Look at those socks and cuffed trousers. Wow! I love it.
