Phavorites & Philm – Three Christmas Favorites

These are three of my favorite Christmas films. Without fail, I watch them every year. “The Nativity Story” is hands down my favorite. I have it on DVD, and even watch it throughout the year.

“The Christmas Story” is also a favorite. One or another channels usually plays this all day long on Christmas. We have no problem dropping in and out on Ralphie and his family throughout the day. It doesn’t matter that we have seen it over and over again for years…we still laugh at our favorite parts. Flick licking the frozen pole never fails to make us laugh and wince at the same time.

“A Christmas Carol” starring a favorite of mine, George C. Scott, is also required viewing in our home. I think it the best version, but perhaps you have a different favorite of this timeless tale.

Phavorites & Philm – The Sound of Music

I have many favorite films, but the “Sound of Music,” is my “Go-To ” choice when I am ill, anxious, or feeling blue. I know it might sound odd, but in all truth, I am sure I have seen this favorite two dozen times plus some. What are your favorite “Pick-Me-Up ” films or books? With all the turmoil surrounding us, the chaos that seems to be erupting at a global scale, perhaps we need to take an hour or two, sit down, and immerse ourselves in what makes us sing or smile.

Philm – Million Dollar Arm

My husband and I absolutely loved this wonderful movie from Disney. I didn’t know it was based on a true story until the very end. Amazing! You won’t regret watching this one.

Philm – The Roosevelts

I enjoyed the recent airing of “The Roosevelts.” I found the series to be interesting and felt it was truthful concerning their lives and their presidencies. If you missed it, try to find it online. The presentation was well worth the time I spent watching it.

Philm – Noah

While I absolutely loved yesterday’s feature “philm” of “God is not Dead,” I’m on the opposite side of the fence concerning today’s review. I’m not including the official trailer of “Noah” because I pretty much disliked this whole attempt of portraying one of the greatest of Bible stories on the big screen. I thought the movie was horribly done, and filled with imaginary content that neither added to the story, or was in any way near truth. I am only glad I did not see this in the theater, and only wasted a little over a dollar to rent it through Redbox.

Philm – God Is Not Dead

God Is Not Dead

I cried during parts of this terrific film, I smiled…I clapped my hands together. I imagine most of those in the theater applauded at the same point in the movie as I did. Definitely a worthwhile feature film to rent on DVD. I wish I had seen it in the theater on a big screen.

Philm – Twelve Years a Slave

Twelve Years a Slave won this year’s Oscar for best picture. I recently viewed the movie “On Demand.” I found it to be a good representation of this time in the history of the United States. What struck me most was the paragraphs of explanation at the end of the movie: most free people of color who were kidnapped and sold into slavery never escaped from that bondage, Solomon Northrup was an exception to those percentages. The movie is rated “R” due to extreme violence, brief nudity and some brief sexual situations.

I have seen very few movies in the recent years, but chose to see this one because of it’s historical content. I am glad I did. It opened up my eyes to a whole new horrific facet of life as a person of color in that period of history, the possibility of being kidnapped and sold into slavery.

It’s easy to shake our head and go about our days aware of the past, but also relieved it is just that, the past. Unfortunately, slavery still exists around the globe in different forms, people are used as “property” all over the world.

Slavery in the Modern Day World

I don’t know what is to be done about modern-day slavery, but as in all things, the first step in solving a problem is to bring a sense of awareness of the issue to more people.

Philm – The Impossible

I recently watched the film “The Impossible.” Based upon the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand, the true story was both terrifying and inspiring. When the Tsunami struck, for several minutes I forgot I was in my living room sitting in my comfy green chair, but instead had the sensation of being swept under with the characters on the screen.

A good movie, but it leaves you quite shaken at times…definitely not a film for the fainthearted. The Impossible is good, but more uplifting than entertaining.

Phavorites & Philm – Enchanted April

Enchanted April

This is one of the movies I put in the DVD/Video player when I am feeling ill or blue. The first time I saw this gentle story I did not care much for the slow pace, but I am so glad I gave it a second chance. I have viewed the movie many times since that first glimpse into the story, and I never tire of it’s timeless appeal.

Favorite scene: Mellersh standing in hallway wearing only a  towel after bathroom blows up around him. Funny.

Philm – “The Bible” on the History Channel

3/8/2013 – I posted this before I actually viewed “The Bible.” I was a bit disappointed in the first episode. I found the tiny bits of fact-changing irritating in the extreme. It would have been very easy to make every fact accurate. I also found the production very dry, and know I won’t have the same enthusiasm to view the remaining episodes.
One example: We have had many fine adaptations of Moses and Pharoah in films, but very few of Isaac and Jacob, and how the tribes of Israel became twelve in number. I would have much rather they portrayed these stories in some way and cut down on the length of time spent on Abraham and Moses.

I love so many of the old Bible films, “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Barrabas,” “The Robe,” “The Ten Commandments.” Even “Ben Hur,” while not taken directly from the Bible, tells the story of JESUS, and can keep me spellbound for its 212 minutes.

I was thrilled when I heard that The History Channel was going to present a mini-series based on the Bible. Starting this evening, it will be presented on Sunday evenings at 8 o’clock over the course of five weeks. I will be watching.

Here are a few clips from the mini-series: Clips from “The Bible.”
