In February, my area of the world becomes a landscape of grey and brown. The absence of foliage creates in me a renewed appreciation for the form of tree limbs against the winter sky.
Vines, hidden by leaves in warmer months, fascinate me as they twist and turn around the tree branches that support their winding attempt to reach the sun.
The sweet-smelling blossoms of the Autumn Clematis, growing along the banks of the creek, have disappeared, leaving behind mahogany (Color Your World – 120 Days of Crayola) seeds in a cloud of snowy fluff.
Shallow puddles and ponds form an ephemeral mosaic.
Daylight is once again lengthening, bringing the slumbering wildlife out of their burrows for water and food.
The emerging leaves of celandine is a sure sign that Spring is on the way.
I love the way the sweet autumn clematis looks in the winter, too. And that’s a great photo of the ice 🙂

Kathy, I wish I lived in your part of the world. The little green leaves coming out are so inspiring- what wild life is peeping out ?

We aren’t sure what the footprints were, but we think it was most likely a raccoon. We saw some signs of beaver in the area (freshly gnawed trees), we know a lot of skunks are starting to come out (unfortunately a lot get hit on our roads) and the stream also has muskrats. Our area has a lot of opossums and squirrels. There are rumors that coyotes are back in the area, and also rumors of wild pigs. A little further north there are black bears.

Nice photos of late winter and the Nature waking up again. We are so very nearly in spring! The daffodils in my garden have finally opened up and colour is slowly returning all around. 🙂

It will be close to a month before ours open, but the crocuses might begin to bloom at any time. I often see their blooms in February. Enjoy your beautiful flowers.
